How To Clean Your Mattress

You may not have thought about cleaning your mattress before, but it's a good idea to do to help freshen up the place you rest your head. Your mattress can build up with dust and other fine debris over time. This fine dust and debris can become a feeding ground for dust mites, so it's good practice to clean your mattress at least once or more per year. See below for tips on how to clean your mattress.

Vacuum

Vacuuming your mattress is the simplest way to clean your mattress of dust. Use the hose extension with the upholstery tool on your vacuum to vacuum the dust and other particles on your mattress. Vacuum around the edging and sides, and be sure to vacuum the entire top. Flip it over to vacuum the bottom of your mattress as well.

Freshen

You can't throw your mattress in the washing machine to clean it, but you can freshen it like it was washed in the machine. Take one cup of baking soda and mix it with a couple of drops of your favorite scented essential oil. Just use baking soda, if you aren't a fan of essential oils. Sprinkle the mixture or baking soda onto your mattress and let it set for about a half an hour, then vacuum it up. The baking soda helps to freshen your mattress, while the essential oil gives it your favorite scent, which may actually help you sleep.

Stain Removal

Let's face it, most mattresses have stains on them from something or another. It happens, and it can be cleaned with just a few simple ingredients. Take 3 tbsp. of baking soda, 8 oz. hydrogen peroxide and a drop of dish soap. Mix the ingredients together into a spray bottle. Be sure to mix them completely, as the baking soda can clump, which may clog your spray bottle. Spray the mixture on your mattress stain and allow it to dry. You can spray it a second time if the stain is stubborn. If there is any residue leftover from the baking soda, you can vacuum your mattress to get rid of it.

Other Tips

  • Use a water-proof mattress pad, especially for little ones. The mattress pad helps to protect the mattress from stains and accidents.
  • Invest in a plastic mattress cover, which helps kill off existing dust mites and prevents new ones from coming.
  • Wash your bedding in hot water often, to help protect against dust mites.
